City Council Candidates
Candidates must collect 100 signatures from registered voters. The signatures need to be from the Council District from which the candidate is receiving the nomination.
Candidates must pay a filing fee of $200. Submitting 800 additional signatures from registered voters can offset the filing fee.
Mayor or City Attorney Candidates
Candidates must collect the nominating signatures of 200 registered voters of the City of San Diego. These voters must have been registered in the city for at least 30 days prior to signing the petition.
Candidates must pay a filing fee of $500. Submitting 2,000 additional signatures from registered voters can offset the filing fee.

Filing Forms for City Officials All City Official Candidates must be residents of the city from which they are receiving their nomination. All candidates must file their nomination papers with the City Clerk during the filing period. If a candidate does not file during this period, a five-day extension will be given to the candidate. The nomination papers must contain at least 20 signatures from registered voters. There is generally no filing fee candidates only have to pay a fee if they want to include a statement in the voting ballot.
